Natural Materials with Unmatched Comfort

When it comes to comfort, durability, and breathability, TENCEL™ Lyocell and TENCEL™ Modal are often in the spotlight – especially in the world of lingerie. Both are textile favorites that combine sustainability, comfort, and function. The difference lies in their feel and strength – but the end result is the same: fabrics perfectly suited for underwear and everyday wear that feel good both on your skin and for the planet. So, what sets them apart – and which one is right for you?

What Is TENCEL™?

TENCEL™ is a trademark owned by Austrian Lenzing AG and covers both Lyocell and Modal fibers. Both are made from wood cellulose sourced from responsibly managed forests, but they go through different production processes that give the materials distinct properties.

TENCEL™ itself isn’t a material, but a certification for Lyocell or Modal that meets Lenzing’s high environmental and quality standards. Lyocell and Modal can also be produced by other manufacturers, but only fibers made by Lenzing can carry the TENCEL™ name.

Similarities Between Lyocell and Modal

Natural origin
Both are made from wood cellulose – Lyocell typically from eucalyptus, and Modal most often from beech trees.

Eco-friendly production
Both are produced in closed-loop systems that recycle water and solvents, minimizing environmental impact.

Breathable and moisture-wicking
They help keep the skin dry and cool – perfect for garments worn close to the body.

Soft and flexible

TENCEL™ Lyocell & Modal in Underwear: Softness, Hygiene, and Comfort Close to the Skin

When it comes to underwear, the choice of material has a major impact on comfort, durability, and hygiene:

- Silky smooth feel

Modal offers an ultra-soft, almost brushed surface. Lyocell feels smoother and cooler against the skin, with a luxurious, silky touch similar to silk.

- Moisture management & breathability

Both materials wick moisture away efficiently, keeping you dry and fresh – especially important for panties and bras.

- Naturally antibacterial

Their cellulose-based origin makes them gentle on sensitive skin and less likely to cause irritation.

- Stretch & shape retention

Modal is often blended with elastane for extra flexibility, while Lyocell provides a stable yet soft fit.

- Durability over time

Modal retains its color and shape even after repeated washing. Lyocell is strong and durable but benefits from slightly more delicate care.

💡Tip: If you have extra sensitive skin, choose Modal for ultimate softness. If you prefer a fresh, cool feel that lasts all day, Lyocell is your best match.
